Confirmation Class

Sarasota Temple confirmationConfirmation is designed for students in tenth grade. This year of study is a “Jewish Journey,”  and is taught by the clergy of Temple Beth Sholom. It is designed to foster a thirst for lifelong learning and to explore and define the role that Judaism plays in the life of each individual student. Through small-group discussions, these young adults learn that they are entering a sacred community (kehillah) in which they can question, challenge, and debate Jewish issues without being judged. It also emphasizes the importance of working together as a community to contribute to the world around them.

The final event of the year is the Confirmation Service. Jewish leaders see a parallel between the Jewish people’s acceptance of the Torah at Mount Sinai and Jewish confirmation students accepting the role of Judaism in their lives. Thus, it has become customary to hold confirmation ceremonies on Erev Shavuot, which celebrates the anniversary of receiving the Torah. In this ceremony, the students create and lead a service that offers insights and teachings to the congregation and includes a personal statement from each student of his or her commitment to Judaism.
